For this shoot, I wanted to imply the different forms in which journey can take and explore the different types of people along with their own journeys that they may take. In order to capture this, I looked at photographers such as Jason Travis and his work on people and their possessions. His images focus on reflecting aspects of a person's life by showing possessions which are personal and special to them. This served as a massive influence on my shoot, as I could take an idea of showing each person in their unique way and apply it to the subject of journey. I could do this by focusing on possessions that people may take with them on different journeys, I would replicate a style similar to Travis' photography in order to show each item in a symmetrical and easy to understand way. This would allow the audience to dissect the lives of the different people and guess what type of journey they may embark on. I would focus on heavy themes of contrast in order to make the items stand out visually from their background; I could apply this through the use of a white background and a black and white filter. I am choosing to take these photographs outside of a studio location in order to reflect a visual style similar to Jason Travis. As I am photographing in an indoor environment with a lack of studio equipment, I have had to adjust my camera settings accordingly in order to achieve an image with enough detail within it. I used a shutter speed of 1/125, an f stop of 2, and an ISO of 4000. This would allow me to have images that are lit well enough under the conditions in order to maintain detail.

My Images:
This image features a heavy boots, a thick jacket, and a section of knives and an axe. This should give the audiences connotations to foragers. This reflects the journey that will be taken by this person as they travel within the wildlife, collecting resources and possibly walking through thick mud. This contrast heavily with city life and instead depicts someone who may live within the countryside within a secluded location surrounded by wilderness.
This image contrast heavily with the last as we see a more casual form of journey. Within the frame, there are two pairs of sunglasses along with one case, a polaroid camera and a baseball glove clutching a baseball. This is clearly a journey that is being undertaken by perhaps a young person who is a tourist in another country. The logo on the ball as well as the feature of a baseball glove imply that the journey is being taken within America. The logo on the ball adds specificity to the journey as it features the New York Yankees symbol. This is a widely known symbol and should immediately indicate the type of journey that the person is embarking on. The use of accessories such as sunglasses imply that the person is travelling somewhere sunny such as America.
Progression:
I feel that I was able to develop the photography techniques used by Jason Travis through composition and apply them in a way that served the purpose of journey. If I were to develop this shoot further, I would take more influence from travis and use portraiture in order to show the person that is being represented within the image, making the idea of what journey the person is going on more apparent to the audience. For my next shoot, I would like to utilise Photoshop within my work and combine it with location photography in order to show journey.
