Connecting Essay 1

Within this image, I attempted to evoke a feeling of journey through time and location. In order to achieve this I made an image featuring someone holding an old photograph of the same area. This implies that the person within the image has embarked on a journey to recreate a memory. This image focuses on heavy themes of contrast in order to exaggerate the story within the image. In order to highlight this theme, I used the fact that this effect was simulated to my advantage. I focused on an area of a large landscape image in order to focus a point of contrast. I managed to desaturate the image and make the image extremely grainy as well as focusing on brown colour tones. This gives the effect that the image had been exposed to the sun and the colour has begun to fade over time in order to imply that it was from another time as well as contrasting dull colours with vibrant  scenery. I also oversized the image slightly and manipulated the image position. This would imply the way that the landscape has changed over time, for example the body of water shifting within the environment. 

This image from the internet features the same technique however this one has been created in physical form. The image within an image composition takes place on a smaller scale, capturing a specific action. The image relies on themes of contrast which can be seen with the black and white filter of the older photo while the surrounding area features vibrant colours. The positioning of the image blends with the rest of the image, however there is not a perfect match. This shows how the environment has changed over time, for example the tree has changed in height since the first image as can be seen from the way the land and the lake do not match within the old photo and the new. 

Both images link under a number of different factors. The most obvious similarity is the format of the  images. Both use similar compositions with the use of image within image photography. Both use heavy themes of contrast in colour in order to establish different moments in time. Both images appear outdated compared to the vibrant surrounding images. The change in the quality of images evoke a sense of progression/journey through time.
